Kodama House is a lofted treehouse bedroom with an accompanying deck and staircase in the Coastal Redwoods of Sonoma County, California. The use of rustic materials with contemporary architectural lines, blends the beauty of nature and the order of the built environment. The exterior is minimalist with an attention to how materials will age in the redwood forest. Our approach was to pick materials that would naturally become more beautiful over time, in line with the design aesthetic, Wabi Sabi. The name Kodama comes from Japanese folklore. Kodama are spirits that inhabit the trees, similar to the dryads of Greek mythology. Kodama House is a blend of old and new design styles all grounded in a sense of place (a redwood forest).
